Tadias and The Pitbully Tree * by Saidat VandenbergBullying is manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of power. Every day, thousands of children wake up afraid to go to school. It continues to be a big problem that affects millions of students, and it has everyone worried, not just the children on its receiving end. Yet because parents, teachers, and other adults don’t always see it, they may not understand how extreme bullying can get. But that should not be the case.

Tadias and the Pitbully Tree written by Saidat Vandenberg is a colorful, illustrative picture book that tells the story of Tadias, a girl who loves life. She has heard about a place in her town called, ‘I Like Me” Street. It is a place where she can be herself, sing and play with her friends. Not knowing how to get there, she asks her mother to give her directions to this beautiful place. Little does she know that on her way to a place street where love and respect reign will be a mean bully tree waiting to scare her away. What will Tadias do? Will she be able to reach “I Like Me” Street?

Tadias and the Pitbully Tree is a story packed with adventures and a boost of self-confidence for all children particularly those who become victims of bullying. In this book, readers will learn that there are some ways to combat psychological and verbal bullying. For children, they will have to develop self- confidence in respond to a bully and likewise will have to seek the support of a guidance counselor, teacher, family or friends, all of whom have very important roles to play to prevent such aggressive behavior to take place.

Likewise, Vandenberg also imparts an important message for parents to keep an open line of communication with their children when they ask for help as well as for bullies who also needed help for themselves. Through these simple steps, this world will become a friendlier and more peaceful place to live in.
